Riu Hotels is now an international hotel and resort chain,
having grown from a small family business.
The company was founded in 1953 with a small hotel in
Mallorca, it now has 103 establishments. Riu hotels are
placed within unspoiled natural environments and Riu work
very hard to preserve these natural environments. The hotels
avoid generating waste as much as possible, with effective
energy and drinking water management.
Following its solid expansion in the Canary Islands, in the
nineties Riu Hotels commenced its internationalisation as a
chain with the opening of the hotel Riu Taíno in Punta Cana
(Dominican Republic). From this island, whose beaches are
among the most beautiful in the world.
In the context of this internationalisation, the RIU family,
owners of the chain, set up a company in 1993 with their
traditional German partner TUI (Touristik Union
International), the largest tour operator in Europe.
2008 saw the opening of new hotels in Mexico, Jamaica and
Cape Verde.
RIU is currently focussing on developing its culinary
offering by consolidating theme restaurants that take
advantage of the finest ingredients and draw from local
techniques, as well as modern preparation and presentation
methods in international cuisine, as part of its
all-inclusive offer. According to destination, guests will
be able to savour exquisite dishes from Mexican, Italian,
Andalucia, Japanese or Asian cuisine, among other
specialties. The company is also working on expanding its
new gourmet concept “Krystal”, created in 2007, which offers
elite fusion cuisine at the chain’s main resorts. Attention
to detail can also be appreciated in the design and
decoration of its dining rooms, as well as the meticulous
presentation of its dishes.
RIU evolves along with emerging trends and its guests’
culinary tastes, combining avantgarde and fusion cuisine at
the hand of the finest professionals in international
gastronomy.
